The Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships

Welcome! The mission of our office is to provide access to postsecondary education by rewarding academic achievement and by reducing the financial barriers that would otherwise prevent students from attending the University of Nevada, Reno. We administer programs of merit aid-scholarships, and need-based aid– grants, loans, and work-study. The diversity and individuality of our student body is an important consideration in the varied programs of assistance and services we offer.

This site is your information highway into the mystifying world of financial aid and your survival guide to navigating the many paths. At the end is the financial assistance you need and want, whether that is a grant, scholarship, loan, or Work-Study employment. Use it to answer questions, inform, find links, understand the process and procedures, do searches, meet deadlines, or explore what the University has to offer. Enjoy the ride!

  • Common Mistakes To Avoid When Completing The FAFSA
If you need to complete your FAFSA or you are running into problems completing your FAFSA, check out this article.

  • What if I am unable to provide my parents' information, their income information and signature, due to special circumstances?
Under Federal law your family is primarily responsible-to the extent they are able-for paying for your college expenses. To determine how much your family can afford to pay towards your college expenses, we must collect your financial information and if you are a dependent student, we must also collect your parents' financial information. Please contact your financial Aid Advisor before you submit your FAFSA if you feel you have special circumstances. Click here for more FAFSA FAQs.

  • Get the Pack Advantage
Are you a Nevada Resident, enrolled full time in the fall or spring semester, and a Pell Grant recipient? You may qualify for the PACK ADVANTAGE. For more information, click here.

  • Check out an exciting, innovative new resource -- College.gov
www.college.gov was designed by students for students and features first-person accounts of students who overcame challenges to going to college such as peer pressure, lack of family support, and financial barriers. It provides relevant, comprehensive information about why to go, how to go, and how to pay for college or other postsecondary education programs. Create your own "roadmap" to college.

  • Need additional funding?
Parents of dependent students are able to borrow additional funds that the student can use toward UNR expenses. The PLUS loan allows a parent to borrow up to the student cost of attendance (minus other aid). We do not include PLUS on the offer letter, but you can review our website for additional information. You must complete the PLUS loan activation form (submit the LAF to UNR) and be approved by the lender to receive the funding. If a PLUS loan is denied by the bank, the student could be eligible for additional loan funds.

  • How much does it cost to attend? What is the academic year student budget?

  • The Native American Alumni Scholarship Application is now available.
Students qualifying for this scholarship will find the application as part of the Nevada Alumni Scholarship Application. Just check the Native American Alumni box, enter your tribal information and complete the application. We have extended the deadline beyond February 1st, so be sure to fill it out if you are eligible.
